English GCSE revision FAQs

How do I support my students to meet exam criteria?

Take phrases from the specific exam board criteria you’re following for the exams and link these to skills you practise in class and tasks students complete.

For example, for Assessment Objective AO3 for AQA GCSE English Literature: ‘Show understanding of the relationships between texts and the contexts in which they were written.’:

  • For modern texts like An Inspector Calls, Lord of the Flies, and DNA:
    • Explicitly connect AO3 to contextual points during lessons
    • Help students identify relevant historical and social context
  • For creative writing in GCSE English Language:
    • Emphasise that spelling and punctuation carry substantial marks
    • Encourage careful review of completed work
    • Help students identify and correct technical errors

How can I help students manage time in their GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature exams?

Running through past exam papers or practice exam questions regularly throughout a GCSE course will help students get into a routine when it comes to timing. Confidence with timings will help students stay calm in exam situations and be able to control their time more effectively.

For example, students should know the length of the exam and how long they should spend on each section or question: i.e. 4 mark questions will only need a few minutes, whereas 20 mark questions require more time to plan and write an answer.

What are the best ways to support students to learn quotations from set texts?

Students can memorise quotations in many different ways. The most effective method often depends on their individual learning style. Here are some methods to try:

  • Active recall: read, cover, say and write.
  • Spaced repetition: repeat at intervals that are closer together over time.
  • Flashcards: write down key quotations based around a character, event or theme on flashcards. Read, cover and say to improve retrieval.
  • Sticky notes and mind maps: write quotations on notes or paper and pin them to the wall. Walk around and try to remember each one.
  • Colour coding: display quotations that are colour coded for important characters or themes.
  • Mnemonics: use rhymes, acronyms or make up a funny saying to help recall.

What SPaG skills do students need to meet exam criteria in GCSE English Language?

Every exam specification will be slightly different, but accurate spelling, grammar and punctuation carry weight in every GCSE English Language exam. Getting the basics right in class can help: such as homophone practice. Use fun language games as lesson plenaries to support students in refreshing their SPaG accuracy.

How can I help my students revise for GCSE English Language?

One of the best ways is to use past papers for exam preparation, download sample papers or create a mock exam. Students can work in groups to revise skills and plan answers to questions, then write individual responses. This enables students to extend their understanding through class support, question analysis and skill revision.

It’s also helpful to model answers for students and get them to evaluate what works and what could be improved. Then, students can write their own well-constructed and detailed response to build confidence and enhance exam skills.

Use the mark criteria for the question being practised so that students are familiar with how they will be assessed and how to achieve each aspect of the criteria. You can ask students to apply specific aspects of marking criteria to a model response or their own responses by labelling in the margin to check they are covering all requirements.
